Interlibrary Loan Services: Lending Services

Guide to borrowing materials from other libraries through interlibrary loan.

Eligibility

We lend materials to:

  • California libraries using the OCLC system: Loan/photocopy service is available for all libraries in California, except law firm libraries in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bay Area law firm libraries are eligible to borrow books directly as unaffiliated borrowers.
  • Other U.S. libraries:  Loan/photocopy service is available to academic and special libraries using the OCLC system.

We DO NOT lend materials to:

  • Public libraries outside of California
  • Foreign libraries
  • Non-UC Hastings individuals
  • Libraries with overdue or lost UC Hastings materials

Material Available for Loan

  • Books: We lend lend monographs from the 4th and 5th Stacks collections for 7-30 days. We do not lend materials from the 4th Floor Research Alcove, Course Reserves, the Circulation Desk collection, microform, or Special Collections. 
  • Casebooks: We do not lend the most recent edition of casebooks.  
  • Periodicals: We do not lend bound or unbound periodicals. Requests for specific articles are accepted.
  • Dissertations and theses: If a second copy is available, we will lend to California libraries and out of state academic libraries only.
  • Government Documents: Generally available for loan. Census material and congressional hearings are non-circulating.
